"An Interesting Leaf" (by Joe DiMino)

An interesting leaf—
I followed the many veins
More deeply involved
Than thought—
Forming a certain intimacy
Quite unexpected;
Surprised how the leaf
Easily confided in me,
Of her seasons
How they would come and go,
Change her green into flaming passion;
Hide from the winter snow;
Hide away from her lover
Only the tree to know—
Each spring
Their secret to grow—

I inquired, “Dear leaf,
May I follow
Between seasons?”—
For I sensed
Much more wanted
To be said;
I sensed much more
To be told
By her darkening red;
The wind came
And lifted her away—
Left only a refrain:
“I’ll explain
With the first spring rain….”
