"Double Minded" (by Joe DiMino)

Nature calls
To my better senses…
Cautiously
I answer with silence,
Having learned to be wary
Of the intrusion
Of my
Other humanity—

Hungrily I peep out:

Blending to foliage;

Stilling, as the near
Lichen rocks
I desperately
Want to imitate—

Feeling green as fields,
Opening to blossoming
Yet wisely
Scenting myself down-wind
To stop
The bolting:

“We are of the same blood”
Recalling Kipling’s Mowgli—
While crippled as Shere Khan
Too often
Lame to the heart
Of mercy
And beauty—
