"The Crystal" (by Joe DiMino)

I gaze into the Crystal,
Seeing past and future--
The want to be
And never was--
The best of intentions,
Ideals that perish in the barracks
Before Reveille--
Die with their eyes
Still closed,
And uniforms unbuttoned--
What we never could take
With us anyway,
And only served
To clothe the truth--

At best, we are naked apes…

At peace, when only nothing
Left to protect….
