 “They Say”(by Joe DiMino)

They say—you know,
The They Sayers—say
Progressive Jazz is
Disjointed—
(Sayers, who never live far
Off the rail)—strict discipline
Their dogmatic
Holy Grail
But we, the fallen practitioners,
To the contrary know
That even unregulated madness
Has bodies of phrases
And times…
As has good prose
And worthy rhymes;
As has meaningful images
One’s own image
None less an image
Though one-of-a-kind,
Basic nature swings
The Heart’s
Sway of drumming
Tempos irregular
Avoiding drones, inhibited
Monotonous strumming;
Also, Jazz has its
Elevated rungs
For expansive soaring—
Free expression
Always the ultimate goal
Jazz is erratic,
Closest to
Spontaneity
Of the soul—
