We Think in Circles (by Joe DiMino)

We think in circles;
Train our children to draw
And color—cut them out,
Pasting them into their lives—
The lesson, to stay within lines
And to mind the borders;
As if time were content
To be all Smiley-faces
With artsy numbers
Instead of allotted breaths
And heartbeats,
Needing conscious will
If ever to escape
Mechanics and live
A program-free moment.
