Why do cats purr?

Which expert need tell me
What the heart
Instinctively knows?

What cold hand of science
Must I stroke with
That would better affirm
What a simple touch, untutored—
As the cat affectionately responding—
Seems always to have known
And never to have learned?

No, love is not a species—
Though often we try
Make it so:
Not word
Not purr
Just basic fur
Or bare flesh
Allowed their natural
Glow….
